About

Overeaters Anonymous is a Fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience, strength and hope, are recovering from compulsive overeating. We welcome everyone who wants to stop eating compulsively. There are no dues or fees for members; we are self-supporting through our own contributions, neither soliciting nor accepting outside donations. OA is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology, or religious doctrine; we take no position on outside issues.

Our primary purpose is to abstain from compulsive eating and to carry the message of recovery through the Twelve Steps of OA to those who still suffer.

Overeater Anonymous

The very first Overeaters Anonymous (OA) meeting was held in Hollywood, California, on January 19, 1960. Today, OA groups are meeting in-person, online, and via telephone in 78 countries. We are known for our high success rate, having no dues or fees, with our only qualifier being a desire to stop eating compulsively.

OA does not have a food plan. The program consists of committing to meetings, obtaining a sponsor, and working the same 12 Steps found in Alcoholics Anonymous. We invite you to join us to find the freedom that many of our members have discovered over the years.

H.O.W.

If you are attending meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area, you will notice the option to attend Overeaters Anonymous (H.O.W.) meetings. H.O.W. stands for Honesty, Open-Mindedness, and Willingness. OA HOW is a special focus group of meetings within within the OA fellowship that share a plan of eating and method of practicing the OA program. OA asks, but does not require, members to honor the focus of these meetings.

Throughout the OA Mid-Peninsula, the OA Regular meetings and OA-HOW meetings are interchangeable. Meaning, you will find both groups represented at all meetings.
